The Mysteries of Harris Burdick

One of my favorite parts of the Mystery Unit for 3rd Grade and The Haunted Center Activities for 5th Grade is to read the stories you write that are inspired by the 12 pictures found in The Mysteries of Harris Burdick book! I found a web page dedicated to publishing stories students have written and I wanted to share it with you! You can read the stories that other students have written or submit one of your own to be posted! I can't wait to read your stories! The Mysteries of Harris Burdick Link

The Author and Illustrator of The Mystery of Harris Burdick is Chris Van Allsburg. He has a fun, interactive website for students to explore. Check it ou!  Chris Van Allsburg

5th Graders ~  I also want to challenge you to look up your favorite author's webpage and share it with the class through the blog.  Make sure to read their bio.  I bet it will give you some insight about why they write about certain topics.   Enjoy!

Analogy Alley

Our critical thinking this week was all about analogies! I was proud of everyone for solving the challenging science analogies and successfully creating two of your own! Here are a couple of links found by your classmates to help you test your analogy skills even more! See if you can find another on-line analogy quiz to play and add the link in a comment. I would also love to see some of your new analogy creations added as a comment to challenge your classmates! Have FUN!

One of my favorite contests is Doodle 4 Google! The theme this year is, "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..." This is your chance to take the Google Logo and change it! You must have a title for your doodle and a 50 words or less statement to explain your answer to the theme!
Happy Doodling!

High Tech Codes

Codes that translate letters into numbers are called alpha-numeric codes.

Codes that use only two symbols are called binary codes.
Morse code is an example of binary code, it uses only dots and dashes.

ASCII (American Standard for Computer Information Interchange) is an alpha-numeric binary code used by computers. It only uses ones and zeros.

Here are two games for you to test your Morse Code and Binary Code skills! Happy Coding!
